Sir We Have an Orc Problem Abilities Hub

Manual firepower for when turret lines choke on ten thousand orcs.

Abilities Hub

Active abilities are the player-controlled half of Sir, We Have an Orc Problem. Turrets handle the continuous stream; abilities punch holes in clumps, save the base during leaks, and cover lanes your Gunners cannot reach in time. Every ability shares the same persistent upgrade tree as towers - cooldown, damage, and unlock nodes appear alongside Gunner penetration and economy picks.

Use this hub to choose which ability page matches your question, then cross-link to Combat Upgrades when deciding whether the next point goes to missile radius or Flamethrower ticks.

Ability roster at a glance

AbilityRoleTypical unlock phase
MissilesClick-to-fire AoE; always available from level oneFrom start; upgrade early
Bombing / strafing runsDirected air strike on a painted areaMid campaign
Orbital laserSustained or burst beam on a zoneLate campaign
NukesMassive emergency clearLate campaign

Exact names in tooltips may read “strafing run” or “bombing run” depending on build version; mechanics are the same - pick a ground target, aircraft or artillery hits the area. Demo patches added stat panels for abilities so you can compare ability DPS to turrets after each run, similar to tower Damage Statistics.

How abilities interact with the upgrade tree

Ability power is not fixed. Missile damage, missile radius, and cooldown reduction nodes appear on early branches because missiles are your only tool before Gunners scale. Mid-tree unlocks gate bombing runs behind enough survival currency and sometimes perfect-clear rewards.

Late branches open orbital lasers and nukes with higher costs and longer cooldowns. Funding them before capping your main tower line is a common mistake - abilities reset pressure; they do not replace passive DPS on a ten-minute map. Upgrade Priority places ability unlocks after economy and cap stability.

Ability cooldown upgrades stack with player skill. Reducing downtime matters more on maps where move speed increases each level and clumps compress at the base wall faster than Mortar flight time.

When to use abilities vs towers

Use missiles and bombing runs when:

  • Two paths merge and turrets focus one side
  • A dense ball reaches the trench while cooldowns on other abilities tick
  • You need cheap burst during Gunner repositioning (recall and replace lines between phases)

Save orbital lasers and nukes when:

  • Orc count spikes into five digits on a single screen
  • Base HP is low and leaks are imminent
  • You can fire once and return to building phase with the wave broken

Avoid firing into thin lines - AoE abilities waste most of their radius. Wait half a second for pathing to stack at chokes. The Missiles page covers lead targeting; Bombing Runs covers strafing patterns.

Missiles

Your default weapon. Available before any tower unlock, missiles teach AoE timing and remain useful through the finale. Upgrade damage, radius, and cooldown on the combat branches; optional hold-to-fire changes how manual spam feels.

Bombing Runs

Mid-game unlock. Call an air strike on a designated rectangle. Stronger than a single missile when orcs cover a wide lane. Cooldown management separates clean perfect clears from leaky wins.

Orbital Laser and Nukes

Late-game emergency tools. Orbital lasers shred sustained clusters; nukes delete almost everything in a huge radius at the cost of long cooldowns and expensive tree nodes. Use sparingly with planning from the Upgrade Planner abilities focus.

Linking abilities to economy and towers

Abilities cost tree points that could buy end-of-battle income or tower caps. The Economy Meta guide argues for income before luxury nukes unless a specific map gatekeeps progress. Conversely, one bombing run unlock can turn a perfect-clear bonus on, funding ability upgrades faster - the loop is intentional incremental design.

Tower choice affects ability value. Flamethrower fronts soften waves before they reach missile range; Cannons thin lines so bombs hit fewer wasted pixels. Read the Turret Tier List alongside ability pages when tuning a full loadout.

Demo and performance notes

Recent demo updates moved explosion simulation to the GPU for large blasts - orbital lasers and nukes should stutter less on big swarms. Strafing runs could previously be triggered multiple times via pause-menu quirks; that exploit was fixed, so plan real cooldowns.

Power Shot (combat branch) interacts with timed ability windows - see Combat Upgrades for when to buy it relative to nuke damage nodes.

Suggested learning order

  1. Read Missiles and practice on level one
  2. Unlock Gunners; keep upgrading one missile stat between tower purchases
  3. Clear mid maps; unlock Bombing Runs
  4. Farm perfect clears if ability nodes require bonus currency
  5. Open Orbital Laser and Nukes for final campaign maps
  6. Tune the full route in Upgrade Planner

Controls reminder

Battle phase starts with Space after placement. Abilities bind to hotkeys shown in the bottom bar - check the controls guide for rebinding on Steam Deck or keyboard layouts. Missiles typically use click-to-target; bombing runs use click-drag or hold patterns depending on version tooltips.

Summary

Abilities turn Sir, We Have an Orc Problem from passive tower watching into active crisis management. Missiles carry early levels; bombing runs stabilise mid campaign; orbital lasers and nukes end late swarms. All of them scale from the same meta tree documented under Upgrades Hub. Start with the child page that matches your current unlocks, and revisit this hub after demo patches add new ability stat panels or balance passes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do abilities persist between runs like tower upgrades?

Unlocks and stat upgrades on the tree persist on your save. Cooldowns reset each battle phase - you choose when to fire each wave.

Which ability should I unlock first after missiles?

Bombing or strafing runs, usually mid campaign when manual missiles alone cannot cover split paths. See Bombing Runs for details.

Are nukes required to finish the game?

No. They are convenience tools for the largest waves. Many clears succeed with missiles, bombing runs, and strong turret lines alone.

Where do ability upgrades appear on the tree?

Mixed with combat nodes - missile stats early, bombing run unlock mid, orbital laser and nuke branches late. Use Upgrade Priority for ordering.
