What the Tesla Coil does

The Tesla Coil is a late-tree cleanup turret in the full Steam release of Sir, We Have an Orc Problem. Unlike Gunners and Cannons that must aim an arc, Teslas attack rapidly in every direction, chain electricity between nearby orcs, and often apply a brief stun. Community launch guides (ProdigyGamers, GrindnStrat, 9Puz) consistently rank Tesla as the strongest all-around cleanup tool once unlocked - not because it deletes the front of a fresh horde, but because it deletes the wounded leftovers that actually end runs.

This page covers unlock timing, rear-line placement, synergy with Flamethrower and Grenade Launcher support, and the official Elemental Carnage achievement that locks you to Flamethrower, Tesla Coil, and Cryo Beam on Level 4.1.

Why Tesla Coil matters after the demo

The public demo taught Gunner, Flamethrower, Mortar, Cannon, and Laser habits. Full release adds Tesla Coil and Grenade Launcher to the seven-tower roster. If your mid-campaign layouts still leak one or two damaged orcs after a perfect-looking kill zone, you usually need cleanup behind the box, not another Cannon on the entrance. That is Tesla’s job.

Official Steam achievements confirm Tesla exists as a named tower type on launch day - Elemental Carnage explicitly requires it. Treat Tesla as a progression milestone on the same tier as Laser unlock before stage 3.2, just later in the tree.

Strengths and limits

Strengths:

  • 360° targeting without drag-to-aim micromanagement
  • Chain lightning multiplies value on packed straggler groups
  • Stun buys fractions of a second for rear Gunners or ability recovery
  • Excellent behind Support + Power layers on Levels 4.x through 6.2
  • Core piece of Elemental Carnage and many Four-tified / Triple Threat mixes

Limits:

  • Wastes attention if placed at the front of a full-health stream
  • Does not replace Support softening or Power pierce
  • Needs enough copies and combat nodes before it feels “broken”
  • Open maps without a defined exit still need geometry from Choke Points

Unlock and upgrade path

Tesla nodes sit deeper than Laser unlocks for most trees. Recommended order once the mid-campaign farm is stable:

  1. Tesla Coil unlock - stop blaming “random leaks” until you can place one.
  2. Maximum Tesla count - two rear coils often beat one over-upgraded coil.
  3. Chain / damage / stun nodes named in tooltips - buy after you have two placements.
  4. Partner caps - Flamethrower or Grenade Launcher fronts that feed damaged orcs into the coil zone.
  5. Economy payout - fund retries while you tune rear angles.

Follow Upgrade Priority for tree-wide spending. Do not buy Tesla before you can clear a reliable farm stage - see Meta Farming Runs.

Placement: behind the kill zone

Community consensus is blunt: do not put Teslas on the front line. Full-health hordes occupy omnidirectional turrets with the wrong targets. Place Tesla Coils:

  • Behind Flamethrower / Grenade Launcher preparation
  • Behind or beside Cannon / Laser / Mortar power rows
  • Near the last recoverable exit, where damaged orcs appear
  • Away from entrances where bounce Lasers already fail (Level 5.1 community notes)

On Level 6.2, launch layouts often wall off sections with Lasers, run Cannons and Gunners on remaining lanes, put Grenade Launchers in front of kill zones, and park Teslas further back. Treat that as a role pattern, not pixel coordinates - your upgrade levels change whether a screenshot works.

Read Turret Arcs and Placement for aimed towers; Teslas still need a physical slot that sees the exit path even if they do not drag an arc.

Tesla versus other cleanup tools

SituationPrefer
Damaged stragglers after a chokeTesla Coil
Early campaign, Tesla lockedGunner nest
Need slow + damage amp before powerGrenade Launcher
Need burn DoT across whole streamFlamethrower
Need pierce on packed full-HP clumpsCannon / Laser

On the Turret Tier List, Tesla sits S for cleanup and high overall once unlocked. Gunners remain mandatory early; Teslas take the late cleanup crown.

Elemental Carnage (Level 4.1)

Steam achievement Elemental Carnage: survive Level 4.1 with only Flamethrower, Tesla Coil, and Cryo Beam. Practical checklist:

  1. Unlock both tower types and Cryo Beam before the attempt.
  2. Place Flamethrowers forward to burn and debuff.
  3. Place Tesla Coils behind to finish survivors.
  4. Use Cryo Beam only when frozen orcs still sit inside Tesla/Flamethrower coverage.
  5. Do not place Gunners, Cannons, Lasers, Mortars, or Grenade Launchers - any extra type fails the condition.
  6. Wait for the Steam popup; a survival without the popup is not proof.

Synergy with abilities

Tesla cleanup pairs with control and burst differently:

  • Cryo Beam - freeze inside the coil zone so chains finish the pack.
  • Missiles - plug a single exit leak while Teslas handle the rest.
  • Bombing Runs - clear a merge; Teslas mop residuals.
  • Nuke / Orbital - emergency tools; do not spend them because Teslas were placed too far forward.

Common mistakes

  • Front-loading Teslas on healthy hordes
  • Buying Tesla damage before a second placement slot
  • Using Cryo Beam on orcs outside coil range during Elemental Carnage
  • Expecting Tesla to replace Laser for the 3.2 speed wall
  • Copying a 6.2 screenshot before your Tesla count unlocks catch up
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Where should I place Tesla Coils?

Behind the main kill zone near exits. Let Support and Power damage the horde first; Teslas finish stragglers with 360° chains.

Is Tesla Coil better than Gunner for cleanup?

Once unlocked and capped, usually yes for late maps. Gunners remain essential early and whenever Tesla is locked or under-copied.

What is Elemental Carnage?

Survive Level 4.1 using only Flamethrower, Tesla Coil, and Cryo Beam. No other tower types and no other abilities.

Was Tesla Coil in the demo?

It is a full-release roster piece highlighted by launch achievements and community guides. Demo players should treat it as a new late-tree unlock.
