What Cryo Beam does

Cryo Beam is a launch-roster control ability in Sir, We Have an Orc Problem. While the Steam store headline abilities are strafing runs, orbital lasers, and nukes, the live 1.0 client also exposes tools such as the manual missile and Cryo Beam. Cryo freezes or heavily slows a group so your permanent turrets - especially Flamethrower fronts and rear Tesla Coil cleanup - get enough time-on-target to finish the pack.

Cryo Beam is not a damage ultimate. Freezing orcs outside useful tower coverage only delays the same failure. This page teaches positional triggers, upgrade priorities, and the official Elemental Carnage achievement that names Cryo Beam beside Flamethrower and Tesla Coil.

Control versus burst

ToolJob
MissilesQuick AoE trim / leak plug
Bombing RunsRectangular density strike
Orbital LaserSustained beam damage on a line
NukeEmergency erase / Overkill 666k
Cryo BeamStop movement so towers finish

Spend burst when a group has broken recoverable coverage. Spend Cryo when stopping movement lets existing firing lines complete their job. Do not attach Cryo to a fixed timestamp - crowd spacing and your upgrade tree move the danger moment.

When to fire Cryo Beam

Good Cryo moments:

  • A dense clump sits inside Flamethrower + Tesla (or Cannon/Laser) coverage but will exit before dying
  • Level 4.1 Elemental Carnage packs need one freeze window for coils to chain
  • Final acceleration on 6.2 when you saved one control answer for the last recoverable point
  • Mortar shells are mid-flight and you need the pack to stay still

Bad Cryo moments:

  • Orcs are already outside every permanent firing line
  • You are trying to hide a permanently empty lane
  • You freeze a trickle that Gunners would have cleaned for free
  • You panic-freeze at wave start and have nothing left for the real surge

Unlock and upgrades

Cryo Beam sits with other ability nodes on the combat tree. Practical order:

  1. Unlock after missiles feel natural and at least one Support tower exists.
  2. Buy duration / slow strength named in tooltips before raw “damage” nodes if present.
  3. Buy cooldown once you are dying because Cryo was still recharging at the real surge.
  4. Stop investing once Damage Statistics and ability panels show turrets carry and Cryo is only a clutch tool.

Upgrade Priority still prefers economy and tower caps before luxury ability ranks. Cryo is cheap insurance compared with Nuke branches.

Elemental Carnage checklist

Steam achievement Elemental Carnage: survive Level 4.1 with only Flamethrower, Tesla Coil, and Cryo Beam.

  1. Strip every other tower type from the build phase.
  2. Flamethrowers forward, Teslas behind - see Tesla Coil.
  3. Keep Cryo for packs that are inside that two-layer coverage.
  4. Do not fire missiles, bombing runs, orbital lasers, or nukes.
  5. Confirm the Steam popup after survival.

Synergy with towers

  • Flamethrower - freeze extends burn exposure on the whole stream.
  • Tesla Coil - frozen stragglers die to 360° chains instead of slipping out.
  • Grenade Launcher - redundant slow in normal runs; together they can over-invest in control - prefer one Support identity per lane unless density demands both.
  • Laser / Cannon - freeze keeps orcs in pierce/beam lines during speed-ramped stages.
  • Gunner - early substitute cleanup when Tesla is locked; Cryo still helps if the nest has line of sight.

Synergy with other abilities

Cryo into Bombing Run or Missile can work if the freeze holds a merge for the strike - but Elemental Carnage forbids those tools. In normal progression, prefer Cryo then towers, and save Nuke for groups that leave recoverable range entirely. See Orbital Laser and Nukes and the Abilities Tier List.

Campaign phase value

  • Early: optional; missiles + Gunners usually suffice.
  • Mid (4.x): rises to A - Elemental Carnage and speed ramps make control matter.
  • Late (6.x): stays A as one of two answers (burst + control) you should still hold for the final acceleration.

Common mistakes

  • Freezing outside tower range
  • Using Cryo as a damage replacement for missing Tesla/Flamethrower unlocks
  • Emptying Cryo on the opening trickle of 6.2
  • Bringing banned abilities into Elemental Carnage
  • Ignoring cursor/aim - freeze the lane that is actually leaking
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Cryo Beam a damage ability?

No. It is a control tool. Freeze only when towers can still finish the frozen group inside their coverage.

When should I unlock Cryo Beam?

After missiles feel natural and you have Support towers online. Priority jumps when you hunt Elemental Carnage on Level 4.1.

Does Elemental Carnage allow other abilities with Cryo?

No. Only Flamethrower, Tesla Coil, and Cryo Beam. Missiles, bombing runs, orbitals, and nukes break the condition.

Cryo or Nuke for late leaks?

Cryo if the pack is still inside tower range. Nuke if the group has left recoverable coverage or you need Overkill damage.
